What Causes Acne

A simple explanation of the causes of Acne

Though many grown adults suffer from acne, the majority of acne sufferers are teenagers. As a matter of fact, it is believed that over 75% of all teenagers suffer from acne to some degree. For this reason, we only will discuss the causes of acne in teenagers.

The cause of acne in teenagers is an oily substance in the skin called sebum. Sebum is caused by an increased production of hormones, which triggers the secretion of it. The sebum becomes trapped in hair follicles and clogs pores, which creates blackheads and/or whiteheads. Often the clogged pores burst, spreading bacteria to the tissue surrounding the area. In turn, the body sends white blood cells to fight the bacteria and to fight infection which in turn creates a pustule, or eruption, much like a blister.

Acne rarely becomes any type of threat to a persons physical well-being, but it can create psychological stress and complications. The good news is that a great deal of acne can be treated in a fairly simple and straightforward manner. To see some of the suggestions for this, click on Treatment of Acne.
