How To Get Bats Out Of The House

A simple solution to rid your house of bats

Most of the time, bats get into attics or other secluded, dark areas, but they also may at times enter an open window or door. Here are a few ways to get bats out of the house.

If the bats are in the attic

The first thing to do is seal all opening that are larger than one-fourth of an inch thick except one. Though it is hard to believe, bats can fit through very small openings when looking for a place to perch. Once you have done this, wait for a few days and seal the last opening sometime around one half hour after dark. Bats tend to feed at this time and your pests should be outside and will not be able to get back in.

If you find yourself in a situation where you can't seal all of the cracks for some reason, some other options are placing a light that will shine on the area where the bats roost or put moth balls in bags with small holes in them and hang them in the area where the bats have been staying.

When the bat is in a regular or living room

When a bat enters the house through an open window or door and is in one of the regular rooms of the house, the best way to get it back outside is to wait until dark, turn out all the lights in the room and open a single window. It should fly outside in search of food.

A final note about bats

It is very important to do everything you can to avoid coming into contact with a bat. Bats carry rabies in many situations, and if you or a family member come into contact with one or are bitten, seek immediate medical attention.
