Finding a Domain Name

Choosing the best domain name and extension.

The first step in starting a web site, after actually getting online, which we have to assume you have because you are reading this, is finding a domain name and purchasing the use of it. There are millions of word combinations that have been registered and untold millions still available.

The odds are good that any common name you may think of for your domain name has been taken, but never fear, there are many ways to get around this. All it takes is a little creativity and imagination.

Here are a few tips for choosing a domain name.

  • Always use a .com extension unless there is just no possibility of a usable name. People tend to always use .com when typing in a web address. The second choice would be .net, but once again, exhaust every possible word combination for the .com extension before using a .net.
  • Once you have an idea for a domain name, think of many possible combinations. Here is an example.

The list can go on for quite some time, and this can be done with almost any combination of words, so hopefully you will always be able to find a .com extension.

Where to buy a domain name

There are hundreds of places on the Internet where you can purchase domain names. I suggest using an established site. I have used godaddy.com and dotster.com, but there are many others. Domain names are available for between $7 and $20 a year. If you are planning to use your site for anything business related, I suggest registering your domain for at least two years. You will always have the option to renew your domain before it expires, but for search engine optimization, you should secure it for longer.

There is no need to use private registration on your domain names, unless you plan to do something dishonest with your site, it is just an extra cost that you don’t need.
